Takurua - new student facility
Opening in 2027, Takurua is a new purpose-built facility for student connection and movement.
The name Takurua appears in the Ika o Te Raki (Milky Way) narrative, with Takurua being one of the principal stars. Takurua represents the winter. It signals change, movement, and transition.
UC鈥檚 current Recreation Centre opened 50 years ago as a sports hall, with spaces added over the years; however, to meet the needs of our growing cohort now and in the future a new space is required.
What to expect:

Two indoor sports courts.
Dedicated fitness spaces including: main gym / separate women鈥檚 gym / spin room.
Multi-use rooms for group fitness and studios for arts and clubs.
Six counselling rooms for the UC Health Centre.
Three rooms for massage and physiotherapy.
Full-size, floodlit outdoor pitch with extended playtime capacity.
- Student social spaces, including rest and recovery zones.
The current Recreation Centre will remain open while Takurua is being built.
